family memoriesBy Paula Friedrichsen

Last week I sat on the floor of my den and looked at family pictures for over three hours. I didn’t intend to spend all afternoon looking at pictures. I had simply decided to dust off the photo albums and move on to my next project. But one thing led to another, and I found myself carried along on the photographic journey of Jeff and Paula Friedrichsen.

A bride dressed in white and a handsome groom, saying their vows before God and man…

Daddy mowing the lawn while his son follows behind with a little plastic mower, “helping” his father…

A very pregnant wife standing in front of the Christmas tree, her husband’s strong arm around her, and a little boy sandwiched between them…

Father and daughter walking along the beach holding hands, a Hawaiian sunset blazing behind them…

The pictures went on and on, telling our story. There were birthday parties and large family gatherings. Twenty-pound Thanksgiving turkeys and crisp winter days of sledding. Just a normal little life. But what a treasure there is in sharing a normal little life together.

If you are struggling with boredom in your marriage and a crushing sense of “average,” it can be easy to discount the treasure of a shared life. But I encourage you to get out those old photo albums and take a trip down memory lane — relishing, embracing, and celebrating a marriage full of memories.Paula Friedrichsen
