Getting Out the Door
Breakfast on the Go
Do you have breakfast on the go, or do you go without breakfast? How many of you skip breakfast? I am guessing most of us, or if you do not skip breakfast than you might fall into the eat the donut with your coffee as you walk into work or drive the kiddos around category. Let’s face it our mornings are rushed and tackling the days tasks can seem more important to us than sitting down to eat breakfast.
All this week we are going to be focusing on getting out the door in the morning and one of the best ways to do that is to have some Breakfast on the go ideas.
But,whether it’s sitting around the table, or breakfast on the go it’s so important! It provides the energy we need to start the day, it gets our metabolism going and we all want that to work right. Nobody likes putting on extra pounds or buying a larger size. So how do we start the day off on the right foot, make it quick, easy and healthy and stay on time?
Below are a few links to give you some ideas about breakfast on the go. Many can be made ahead or take little to no time at all to prepare.
If you have kids there is plenty you can do to set up the night before.
- Before bed set the table with the bowls, spoons, napkins and cereal choices. Add any fruit or bread items needed…anything that does not live in the fridge.
- Have a list in the kitchen of your current breakfast choices so you do not waste time hunting for food. I have a friend who types up breakfast choices for her kids and before she sends them to bed the kids initial what they want the next day. The list changes as her food choices change. This save several minutes each morning for everyone in the house.
- Set your coffee pot at night so by the time you wake up you have hot, fresh coffee.
- Use your Crock Pot for breakfast; it’s not just for dinner.
- Go ahead and chop the fruit or peel it and place it in a Ziploc bag. If you are prepping apples toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Have breakfast on the go choices ready: cheese sticks, yogurts, nuts and homemade breads sliced and in a container as well so you can grab it on your way out the door.

What’s up, I check your new stuff daily. Your humoristic style is awesome, keep up the good work!
For myself I have been making a large batch of green smoothies (banana, mango, berries, spinach) once or twice a week and then I freeze them into portion sized baggies. Each night I pop one out if the freezer and put it into the fridge. In the morning I can place it in a little warm water to make sure it’s defrosted enough to eat/ drink it and I take it with me to drop the kids off. Simple, quick, healthy!
Great tips! We have a rotation of breakfast meals so that we aren’t always eating the same things, although I don’t mind if we had 7 different kinds of cereals to eat each day, and I don’t think my younger girl would mind if we had some kind of egg dish each day. I had found a breakfast “meal plan” of sorts awhile back and then customized it to our week. http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com/moy-meals/breakfast/
My husband and I do bagels a lot! I like to make bagel sandwiches and freeze them that way the just need to be heated up in the mornings. That and coffee are great!
We like to keep breakfast simple: cereal, muffins (that can be prepared ahead of time), granola bars, yogurt, etc.
Thanks for posting these links, Kathi! If I am not 100% organized, we end up getting fast food for breakfast once or twice a week since we need to get out of the house by 6:50am. I am going to try some of these crock pot recipes since I am trying to eat at home as much as possible now that we are focusing on getting healthy this year.
I’ve made baked oatmeal in the past and that made breakfast easy for several days! Yum.
I like to make breakfast burrittos. You can make them the day of or the night before. Scramble eggs and warm your torlilla (about 30 seconds) in microwave while the eggs cook. Feel free to add onion, green pepper left over hash browns or potatoe or other items you like with eggs – what about black olives? Then add eggs to tortilla not too much or you won’t be able to fold it shut add a little cheese if you like 1 – 2 Tablespoons and 1 – 2 Tablespoons of salsa (go easy on the salsa or you will have it dripping on you). Then microwave 30 – 60 seconds if you want to be sure your cheese melts.
Then big step here…wrap the burrito in a sheet of waxed paper MAKE SURE you fold the bottom of the waxed paper such that it will not leak the best way is to place your burritto in the wax paper fold part so you have the paper folded in half long way and the burrito is in the middle of the fold inside the two sides at a perpendicular angle (it looks like an upside down T) then fold the wax paper around the burrito and shoot out the door. All said maybe 5 – 10 minutes. Take a napkin, just in case.
We also love apple burritos. Wash and core your apple and cut into small dice, warm your torilla 30 seconds or so then add 1/4 to 1/2 of the apple dice for each burrito add about 1 Tablespoon of peanut butter and one large marshmallow (or 5 or so small) microwave to melt marshmallow (30 seconds or so). Allow time to cool prior to eating because depending upon how long you microwave the marshmallow can become heated to the temperature of molten lava. Wrap as above and go. Take a napkin, just in case.
Another favorite is to make a bunch of pancakes on the weekend (a double or triple batch) and then freeze the left overs. Pop them in the toaster or microwave for 30 seconds or so (you can top with a damp paper towel to keep them from getting too dry or chewy)- Add a glass of milk and a banana or fruit. Volia snappy fast breakfast!!!
Enjoy!!!!
I enjoy making a large batch of French Toast on the weekend (my griddle can hold 12 slices!), freeze the extras on cookie sheets for an hour or two, then pop the frozen slices into a zip bag. The frozen slices can be popped into the toaster. I like to spread the warmed slices with peanut butter & honey for a quick breakfast.
Make pancake batter the night before.
Okay mother of three beautiful girls. Two are twin newborns… We all eat cereal in the house and me and the mister have coffee with whipped cream on top. Once a week I plan on making your breakfast casserole and adding avocados to make a burrito. On the weekends I run to the local bakery for fresh warm rolls and two coffee lattes…
Sorry I don’t really have any tips like that. It’s pretty much either we have time for stuff that takes more time to make or we eat easy things bc we are in a hurry.
Pumpkin pancakes. I fix a batch in the silver dollar size, freeze them and take out what we want. The kids eat them as is. They are sweet enough that you don’t need to add syrup.
