In this episode Kathi chats with guest and long time friend, KariAnne Wood about the fun and freedom in cultivating your own decorating style.
In her latest release, The DIY Style Finder: Discover Your Unique Style and Decorate It Yourself , KariAnne encourages listeners with some simple DIY mantras:
- Don’t give up on your dreams.
- Learn from your mistakes.
- Embrace your imperfections.
- Release any stifling rules that limit your creativity.
Through the book’s easy style quiz, readers can identify their personal décor tastes. These include the Traditional, Farmhouse, Transitional, Contemporary and Coastal styles. If you feel stuck, when it comes to style, it’s worth mentioning that clutter often stifles creativity.

KariAnne Wood
KariAnne Wood, writes the decorating and lifestyle blog Thistlewood Farms from her project-filled historic home in Dallas, Texas. She recently followed God’s call and jumped back “home” with her family from the middle of the country to the busy Dallas Metroplex where she lives with her husband and four children.
If you wander down the tree-lined streets of KariAnne’s beloved hometown, McKinney, you might find her painting mismatched chairs, listening to Christmas carols no matter the season, singing Scripture, or walking hand in hand with her knight-in-shining-armor husband to a Friday night football game. She loves sweet tea with lime, thunderstorms, good books, milk glass, and yard sales, and she is an imperfect DIYer saved by grace.

I think my style is traditional with a little transitional and coastal! Looking forward to taking the quiz!
My decorating style is traditional!
I like Magnolia farmhouse style decorations…
Modern Farmhouse
Traditional in our whole house. Except my office, which is more beachy and transitional.
I think my style is Traditional with Transitional mixed in.
I think I fit the farmhouse style category, but I love French country ?, I am French country farmhouse!

Hi Kathy and KariAnne, thanks for this episode and the giveaway! My style has definitely changed over the years, and now that we have teenagers my kids are getting interested in finding their decorating style as well. We are in process of decluttering all the “little kid” stuff and beginning to redecorate with what we like now. I definitely want to read this book!

I think that I’m most likely to be coastal or farmhouse style, but my style doesn’t quite seem to fit either one. I like color (sometimes quite bold color) on the walls and more neutral furniture but also natural wood in lighter or redder colors than I often see in real life or magazines. I haven’t been especially successful in achieving this look for my place, but my family has also moved frequently and not often had the freedom to paint as we like in rented spaces. In our area, we haven’t been able to afford a place long enough to really get settled in before we need to change it up again due to rising housing costs. I’d love the opportunity to explore this concept further!
Most of our furniture is from Ikea because that’s what we can afford. I like streamlined, mid-century modern upholstered furniture mixed with more country/farmhouse accessories.
I have no style- that’s my problem!! Trying to get rid of clutter and create a welcoming home, it seems like a long process, 2 steps forward, 5 steps back, but I am not giving up!
I just need all the help I can get. I don’t really have a style and I’m not creative at all. Help!
Having just moved, I’m trying to fit my old style into my new home. Or find my new style… Plus we’ve added grandkids to the mix here in Texas, so that adds a dimension I haven’t’ had to think about for 30 years….
When you were describing the traditional style on the podcast, that sounded most like me. But I want to try to challenge myself to be more of a mix of the styles because that sounded fun!
I am sentimental so I like to surround myself with family memories, photos, art, etc
